Three Cultures Exhibition

Frigiliana, 24-27 August 2017

I have been visiting Spain for three decades. It’s my favourite European country because of its people, culture and climate. Whenever were are in Andalucia, we always visit our good friends Rafael and Rose Marie.

In 2017 they invited me to to display my work at their restaurant during the Three Cultures Fiesta in Frigiliana. We were delighted by this kind offer and arranged an exhibition.

Themes and Variations

Photographs by Alan Clements

When you’ve taken a few hundred thousand images over the last two decades, where do you start when you want to create a tiny subset for an exhibition? What goes in and what stays out? Do you choose what you like, or what you think others will like? Do you have a strong theme, or do you cover a wide range of topics?

My work is varied and ranges  from opportunistic street photography with images snatched in a second, to cityscapes and even aerial photography. I’ve called the exhibition “Themes and Variations” because I’ve taken a few themes that highlight my work, and then chosen a range of images that highlight the theme. The gallery is divided into eleven walls, each with its own theme.

Pride!

This exhibition focuses on the New York LGBT March. It is not simply about the march or the marchers. It concentrates on the message and several of the images show the diverse range of messages being presented by the marchers.

The exhibition was at the Asylum Art Gallery, Wolverhampton, 12 April 2019 - 1 May 2019

Work in Progress

My next project provides images of Morocco and Luxor in Egypt.

Aerial Abstract

My first exhibition was at the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough. It was of photographs I’d taken from the air and which looked abstract when views as a print; for example, images of docks taken at 3,000 feet look like printed circuit boards.

My Life

Alan Clements Background

I was born in Warrington Lancashire in 1948 and studied electronics at the University of Sussex. For most of my working life, I’ve taught computer science at the University of Teesside, becoming a professor in 2001.

I’ve always been interested in photography, throwing myself into it only when digital cameras became affordable and image quality became comparable with conventional film.

My photographic interests are varied: landscape, architecture, urban (particularly street art), parades (Venice Carnival, Whitby Goth Weekend, NYC Pride, etc), aerial (I have a pilot’s licence and can fly Piper Warriors, Archers, and Arrows).

As well as photography, I am interested in travel. Over the last year or so, I’ve visited Tokyo, Hanoi, Lisbon, Berlin, New York City, and Venice.

My last flight

This is me after my last flight as a pilot.

I haven’t flown for a couple of years for several reasons: the increased cost of renting an aircraft, worsening meteorological conditions, and I haven’t renewed my medical.
